Welcome to Maltese summer – hot sun, warm winds and long, lazy days by the beach. As with any other turn of the season during the year, our body begins to develop cravings for certain food and ingredients. Our team at Charles Grech Bistro have looked into what kind of summer diet you should follow, and why.
It’s getting hot in here…
… so take off all those carbs. (Just the “bad” ones, anyway!)
The heat during the summer months makes us sweat to keep our skin cool, which means that our body needs to replenish whatever we’ve lost. This is why we often hunger for vegetables such as cucumbers (which are about 96% water), asparagus and celery. Fruit like strawberries, grapefruit, apples and watermelon are also very refreshing and juicy.
Crunch on some corn
We’ve got good news for you BBQ lovers – the ever-popular corn on the cob is actually a super healthy summer snack. It’s low in calories and high in fibre, as well as being rich in antioxidants and nutrients which are very beneficial to eye health.
Super iced to meet you
One of the healthiest drinks you can indulge in during summer is none other than iced tea. With plenty of antioxidants referred to as flavonoids, tea is very good for your bones, gums and teeth. Adding orange juice or other citrus fruits also makes it a great source of Vitamin C, with the juice helping to preserve the benefits of the flavonoids.
Tuck into some tomatoes
When in Malta, make sure to incorporate our delicious Mediterranean tomatoes into your summer diet – they’re ripe, fresh, juicy and a great addition to any summer salad. Tomatoes may actually help to prevent sunburn; they contain a carotenoid called lycopene which not only gives the fruit its red colour, but also helps to reduce and protect against damage caused by UV rays.
Feast on some fish
Fish is popular all year round on the Maltese islands, but particularly in summer. Swordfish is a traditional and well-loved dish in Malta and Gozo; its sweet flavour and meaty texture pairs very well with pasta and a good sauce. Fish in general is full of health benefits, including calcium, phosphorus, omega 3 fatty acids and plenty of vitamins.
Our bistro in Sliema is proud to offer a menu that is not only delectable but also varied and nutritious – perfect for a healthy summer diet. Come over and savour our Spaghetti Swordfish, served on a bed of Mediterranean paradise featuring juicy olives and the freshest tomatoes. Or perhaps you’d like to try the Corn-Fed Chicken Breast: corn on the bone with lentil and pancetta ragù. Make Charles Grech Bistro your dining destination this summer!
