One of Cuba’s oldest cocktails, the Mojito is now a staple of bars and restaurants the world over. It’s beloved by many for good reason – due to its refreshing nature and particular blend of ingredients, it’s thought of as the perfect summer cocktail. Our expert bartenders here at our stylish bistro in Malta have gathered a few interesting facts about this popular, minty beverage below.
1. According to legend, it was one of Ernest Hemingway’s favourite drinks
Whether or not the famous American writer did actually consider the Mojito to be his drink of choice is up for debate among leading historians. However, many do believe that it was Hemingway who made this cocktail famous in the first place, as he was a frequent guest at Havana’s La Boguedito del Medio. Some claim that it was he who wrote the inscription on one of the bar’s walls, which reads “My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita”.
2. The James Bond franchise helped make the drink popular again
Thanks to Pierce Brosnan’s performance in the 2002 film Die Another Day, Mojitos saw a resurgence in popularity across the globe. Brosnan’s Bond can be seen enjoying this cocktail whilst flirting with Halle Berry’s character, Jinx.
3. It has more than one name origin
Nobody is quite sure where or how the name “Mojito” originated. One story goes that it might have roots in an African language, where the word “mojo” translates into a kind of magical talisman or charm. It was African slaves who worked on sugar cane farms in Cuba that are said to have mixed together mint, lime and sugarcane juice as liquid relief from the sweltering heat.
Others say that the name is just a derivative of the Spanish word mojadito, which means “a little wet” in English.
