The eternal question: drink or dessert? Over here at Charles Grech Bistro we say: why not both? Dessert cocktails were especially created for this purpose; indulge in all your favourite after-dinner flavours with a hint of luscious liqueur. Here are a few delicious drinks that you can treat yourselves to, available at the classiest bistro Malta has to offer!

The Espresso Martini

Indulgent, rich and creamy, this is indeed a drink to be savoured. It’s the perfect cocktail for those who are more in the mood for dessert rather than coffee, yet who still want an extra kick to the system to keep the party going. Dick Bradsell, a British bartender in the 1980’s, is unanimously credited with the recipe for this beverage. He claimed to have created it for a young model who visited his bar one night and asked for a very specific cocktail, so he threw together sugar, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur and vodka. The result was a bittersweet fusion of flavour that has remained immensely popular to this day.

The After Eight Martini

Yet another exquisite member of the Martini family, the After Eight Martini is a fabulous after-dinner drink that’s usually made with chocolate mint, vodka and white crème de menthe. The latter is an alcoholic beverage that contains the flavour of mint or dried peppermint, and is a common ingredient in various cocktails.

Dona Antonia ‘Reserva Port’

This Portuguese dessert wine is an exercise in fine taste and sophistication. At once fruity, spicy and nutty, its complex flavour is a result of slow maturation in oak wood, the typical aging process of most tawny ports. It’s best appreciated after a meal of lamb, or a dish containing different fruits and nuts.

Pedro Xemines Sherry

It was Alexander Fleming who once said, “If penicillin can cure those that are ill, Spanish sherry can bring the dead back to life.” And, as with many other things, he wasn’t wrong! This heavenly liquid bonbon is often referred to by the initials P.X., and dark, intensely sweet taste is derived from extremely ripe grapes dried in the sun, together with an exclusively oxidative ageing process. The result is a velvety, syrupy texture with a hint of acidity tempered with sweetness, which lingers satisfyingly on the palate long after the sherry has been consumed.
